The discovery of C60
Nearly 40 years ago, scientists Robert Curl, Richard Smalley, and Harold W. Kroto discovered buckminsterfullerene, which launched a new branch of chemistry, resulting in a Nobel Peace Prize for their work. C60, as it became known because of its 60 carbon atoms, proved to be the first of several similar forms of carbon collectively dubbed fullerenes. Since the discovery of fullerenes, research on these compounds has increased significantly.
In 1996, scientists who earned the Nobel Prize in chemistry discovered that buckminsterfullerene, known as the “free radical scavenger,” contains powerful detoxification capabilities and anti-oxidation capacity—172 times that of Vitamin C. Fullerene, commonly known as carbon-60 (C60), is currently rated as one of the most effective and most stable antioxidants available. Since its discovery, research on these compounds has increased significantly.
In 1996, scientists who earned the Nobel Prize in chemistry discovered that fullerene, known as the “free radical scavenger,” contains powerful detoxification and antioxidation capabilities.
Japan’s Mitsubishi Group collected five popular antioxidants (Vitamin E, Vitamin C derivatives, astaxanthin, glutathione, and arbutin) and fullerene for comparative experiments. In these four tests, fullerene proved to have a significant advantage over other antioxidant ingredients.
Secret Ingredient: Fullerene
C60, also known as buckminsterfullerene, is the smallest table sphere-shaped carbon atomic cluster, comprising 60 carbon atoms that form a structure that resembles a hollow soccer ball. The way that molecules bond with C60 allows it to interact with other environmental components, creating temporary attractions that allow it to carry and move the attracted molecules. This transport, together with the C60 free-radical scavenging ability, contributes to the reduction of oxidative stress, decreasing the likelihood of neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, heart disease, and other chronic conditions.

The benefits of antioxidants
Studies have shown that antioxidants can counteract oxidative stress, which is thought to contribute to a variety of metabolic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
